Is there fruit?
The next morning as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. He noticed a fig tree in full leaf a little way off, so he went over to see if he could find any figs. But there were only leaves because it was too early in the season for fruit. Then Jesus said to the tree, “May no one ever eat your fruit again!” And the disciples heard him say it. When they arrived back in Jerusalem, Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out the people buying and selling animals for sacrifices. He knocked over the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves, and he stopped everyone from using the Temple as a marketplace. He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer for all nations,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves.” - Mark 11:12-17 (NLT)
As Jesus approached Jerusalem in His final week, He encountered a fig tree full of leaves but barren of fruit. It promised life but delivered none. The next scene is no accident: He enters the temple and finds activity, noise, commerce, and religion—but no holiness. The fig tree preached a sermon before Jesus ever spoke one. Israel had Scripture, sacrifices, priests, feasts, and traditions. But when the Messiah came looking for repentance, faith, and righteousness, He found only leaves. The nation looked alive, but it was spiritually dead.
Dear brothers, the longing of my heart and my prayer is that the Jewish people might be saved. I know what enthusiasm they have for the honor of God, but it is misdirected zeal. For they don’t understand that Christ has died to make them right with God. Instead they are trying to make themselves good enough to gain God’s favor by keeping the Jewish laws and customs, but that is not God’s way of salvation. They don’t understand that Christ gives to those who trust in him everything they are trying to get by keeping his laws. He ends all of that. - Romans 10:1-4 (Living Bible)
This is a sobering reminder that God is not deceived by appearances.
Leaves may impress people; fruit pleases God.
Different kinds of fruit trees can quickly be identified by examining their fruit. A variety that produces delicious fruit never produces an inedible kind. And a tree producing an inedible kind can’t produce what is good. So the trees having the inedible fruit are chopped down and thrown on the fire. Yes, the way to identify a tree or a person is by the kind of fruit produced. - Matthew 7:17-20 (Living Bible)
Nothing but leaves! The Spirit grieves
O'er years of wasted life;
O'er sins indulged while conscience slept,
O'er vows and promises unkept,
And reap from years of strife
Nothing but leaves! Nothing but leaves! - Lucy Ackerman
Would my life convict me of saving faith if words were removed?
Am I content with outward morality but resistant to inward repentance?
Is Christ my Savior and my Lord?
Lord Jesus Christ, You see me as I truly am. Nothing is hidden from Your eyes. I confess that I am capable of producing leaves without fruit—activity without devotion, words without obedience, appearance without life.
Search my heart, O God. Expose every place where I have settled for religion instead of repentance, for knowledge without submission, for zeal without truth.
Cleanse the temple of my heart. Drive out anything that competes with Your lordship—pride, self-reliance, fear of man, love of comfort, hidden sin.
Grant me true repentance, living faith, and a heart that delights in obedience. Let my life bear the fruit that only Your Spirit can produce—love, humility, holiness, perseverance, and obedience.
Keep me from deception. Keep me from trusting in past experiences or outward works.
Teach me to abide in You daily, moment by moment, for apart from You I can do nothing.
May my life honor You, and may You find fruit when You come near.
I submit myself again under Your rightful rule.
You are not only my Savior—You are my Lord.
In the name of Jesus, Amen.
Be Encouraged to be known not by the leaves of religious façade but by the fruit of the Spirit.
